There's a growing confusion among digital marketing professionals: are GEO and SEO the same thing? Did one replace the other? The short answer is no, and understanding why is what separates brands that will dominate search in the coming years from those that will disappear from it.

This article explains what each is, how they differ in practice, and why, in 2026, you'll need to work with both in tandem.

What is SEO, in a nutshell

SEO, Search Engine Optimization, is the set of practices that makes a website appear as high as possible in search engine results like Google. It works on three fronts: technical (speed, indexing, structure), content (relevance to keywords), and authority (links and domain reputation).

The ultimate goal is simple: gain positions, gain clicks, drive traffic to the site.

    What is GEO

GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, is the discipline of optimizing content so that generative AI models, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini, cite your brand when answering a question.

Here, there isn't a list of ten blue results. There is a single, synthesised answer derived from various sources. The goal is no longer just to be clicked, but to be the chosen and mentioned source within the answer.

    Practical Differences

The best way to understand is to place the two side-by-side.

The most important difference is in the last line. SEO delivers options and lets the user choose. GEO delivers an already filtered answer. If you are not part of that answer, your brand simply does not exist in that interaction.

    Why it's not a replacement

It's tempting to conclude that GEO will kill SEO, just as digital killed print ads. But the reality is different, for two reasons.

First, Google hasn't disappeared. Billions of searches still go through traditional results every day, many with purchase intent. Ignoring SEO is leaving money on the table.

Second, and more importantly, SEO feeds GEO. Several AI models draw information from the same indices and sources that Google values. A well-optimized, clear, and authoritative page is more likely to be both well-positioned and cited. The work overlaps.

The right way to look at this isn't GEO versus SEO. It's GEO plus SEO, with the same content designed to win in both scenarios.

    What to do in 2026

    The practical recommendation is straightforward:

    1. Maintain a solid SEO foundation. Clean technical aspects, relevant content, built authority. This remains the cornerstone.
    2. Add the GEO layer. Structure content to answer real questions, with clarity and verifiable data, and ensure your brand appears in the sources that models read.
    3. Measure both. Track organic traffic as always, and also start testing whether you are cited in the main AI assistants.

    Conclusion

GEO and SEO don't compete, they complement each other. One ensures your presence where people still search the old way, the other ensures your presence where they ask AI. In 2026, the winning brand won't choose between the two. It will do both with the same content strategy.
