SEO in 2026 is no longer just Google: what is GEO and why you should already be concerned

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini are replacing Google in millions of searches. If your brand doesn't appear in LLM responses, you're losing leads. How to change that.

SEO in 2026 is no longer just Google: what GEO is and why you should already be concerned

For 25 years, SEO meant one thing: appearing on the first page of Google. In 2026, that is still important — but it's no longer enough. More and more purchasing decisions start not on Google, but with a question to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini.

And in these LLMs, your brand either appears in the answers, or it doesn't exist.

The new discipline is called GEO — Generative Engine Optimization. And for most Portuguese SMEs, it is still uncharted territory.

Classic SEO vs. GEO: the practical difference

Traditional SEO: optimizing so that Google ranks your page above others when someone searches.

GEO: optimizing so that LLMs cite your brand when someone asks something related to your industry.

    Real examples:

    • "What is the best CRM for small businesses in Portugal?" — who is cited?
    • "How does VAT work in the export of services to the EU?" — which site is the source?
    • "Do you recommend digital marketing agencies in Lisbon specializing in SaaS?" — does anyone appear?

If your company should appear in these answers and doesn't, it is invisible to a growing slice of the market.

How LLMs decide what to cite

There isn't a public algorithm, but there are observable patterns:

    1. Frequency of mention in quality web content.
    2. Co-occurrence with relevant category terms.
    3. Perceived authority (links, citations in credible sources).
    4. Clear semantic structure of the content (FAQs, lists, definitions).
    5. Presence in training data and real-time sources (Wikipedia, Reddit, niche forums).

Yes — Reddit weighs more than many professionals would like to admit.

7 concrete actions for GEO in 2026

    1. Structure content as answers, not as articles

Each piece should clearly answer a question in the first paragraph. LLMs extract answers, not clicks.

    2. Create "definition" pages for terms in your industry

If you sell retail automation, have a dedicated page for "retail automation: definition, examples, tools." LLMs love canonical pages.

    3. Get your brand on sources that LLMs read

Wikipedia (where applicable), Crunchbase, G2, industry directories, GitHub for tech companies, Reddit with genuine participation.

    4. Publish original data

Studies, benchmarks, surveys from your industry. LLMs prioritize primary sources.

    5. Use schema markup

JSON-LD for Organization, Product, FAQPage, Article. LLMs use explicit semantic structure.

    6. Ensure your site is "crawlable" by the new bots

GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. If you are blocking these user-agents in robots.txt, you are taking yourself off the map.

    7. Build focused topical authority

It's better to be the reference for "ERP for civil construction in Portugal" than to try to be for "ERP." In LLMs, niche always beats horizontal.

    What to measure (and how)

GEO doesn't yet have tools equivalent to Search Console. But you can:

    • Manually search the 20 most relevant questions in your industry on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini.
    • Note whether your brand appears, in what position, with what context.
    • Repeat monthly. It's an imperfect proxy but it's more than 99% of the market does.

There are emerging tools (Profound, AthenaHQ, Otterly) that automate this. It's worth testing.

Don't abandon classic SEO — combine

Google still generates most of the traffic for most websites in 2026. Don't disinvest. But if you're doing SEO without doing GEO, you're optimizing for a world that's disappearing.

The good news: 90% of GEO actions also help classic SEO. Well-structured content, topical authority, and schema markup rank better on Google AND are cited by LLMs.

At Scalor, we design integrated SEO + GEO strategies for SMEs that want to be found — on Google, ChatGPT, and wherever their customer searches. Convince us.
